Project Description
In this Dortmund steel rolling mill, large sheet pile walls made of thick steel plates were rolled. But the city limits of Dortmund got too close, and the mill had to shut down. DDM was tasked with clearing everything out.
The rolling mill consisted of a huge area with industrial buildings. Inside, there were all kinds of equipment like a furnace and various rollers used to heat steel plates until they were red-hot and then roll them into the right shape, much like pizza dough. The client decided to sell all the equipment both inside and outside. The buildings themselves had to be preserved to eventually be sold along with the property to a project developer.
DDM, along with several other companies, made an offer for the material. The trick was to make an accurate estimate of the total weight and also what could still be sold as usable. In the end, it was about 40,000 tons of steel and equipment, of which 10,000 tons could be sold as reusable. This, by the way, matched DDM's estimate.
DDM worked on this project for 18 months with an average of 30 specialists, five demolition excavators with hydraulic shears, two heavy forklifts, and a lot of smaller equipment. Both the client and the involved authorities were particularly pleased with the project's progress and results. The special thing about this project is that the surrounding area didn't notice the work at all during this time.
